I have spent nine years working out what offshore gambling offers actually cost the people who take them. Before that I was a data analyst in insurance pricing, which turns out to be unhelpful preparation for very little and excellent preparation for reading a wagering clause.
The work itself is unglamorous. If nobody published it, I write that nobody published it rather than borrowing a plausible figure from a competitor's review. The same five steps every time, in the same order
Terms before marketing
I read the bonus terms, the payments page and the VIP schedule before I look at a single banner. The banner tells you what the operator wants you to think; the terms tell you what it has committed to.
Convert to turnover
Every bonus becomes a single number: how many dollars must pass through the account before the money is withdrawable. It is the only figure that lets you compare two offers honestly.
Test the cashier both ways
Depositing is always easy. I care about the other direction — minimums, per-transaction ceilings, which card schemes work outbound, and how long the money really takes after it is released.
Time the support desk
I ask live chat a question with a factual answer and see how long it takes and whether the answer matches the published terms. Disagreement between the two is worth more than either on its own.
Establish the legal position
Who holds the licence, in which jurisdiction, and what that means for an Australian player who needs to escalate a dispute. Usually the answer is uncomfortable and I write it down anyway.
Record what is missing
Absent payment rails, absent sports markets, absent tools. What a site does not have is often more decision-relevant than what it does, and it is almost never on the marketing page.
